What are Variegated Houseplants?

Indoor plants with striped leaves with spots or colored edges are considered Variegated Houseplants. These lines and spots can have various colors, such as white, cream, red, yellow, or light green, mixed with standard green, which makes the indoor plants look complex and attractive.

From now on, don’t confuse the colorful houseplants with the variegated ones with red, purple, pink, and orange leaves or flowers.

While some of the variegated houseplants are rare houseplants and challenging to find in nature and also have a high price, some of them are cheap and you can easily access them and use them to beautify your home.

I am eager to introduce you to some variegated houseplants I know. Decide which one is best for your house.

1. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum Variegatum)

Spider plant in a white pot on the ground

This popular houseplant has long and arched leaves with a green center and white stripes along the edges.

It produces flowers that turn into baby plants. After seeing these tiny white flowers, I usually start to propagate them and give them as gifts to my beloveds. Whenever I tell them about the benefits of this variegated houseplant, they are surprised.

First, the spider plant is an air-purifier houseplant and cleans the air in your living environment. Second, it is easy to take care of a houseplant and fight like a moral soldier with a lack of light and water, but remember that if the health of the indoor plant is essential to you and you want your houseplant to grow to 12 to 15 inches, hydrate it once a week. Please leave it in bright and indirect light and use well-draining soil.

2. Marble Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum Marble Queen)

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Marble') on a small table in a room

Green heart-shaped leaves with a white and green marble pattern have made this houseplant popular. In addition, it has trailing vines that are good at climbing and cascade from hanging pots.

With this type of pothos, you can be sure that the air is healthy and fresh because it cleans the air well.

I highly recommend this houseplant with variegated leaves to all newcomers who want to grow plants at home because taking care of it is a piece of cake. This indoor plant prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering, growing in low to bright indirect light. As the light level changes, the variety of patterns of this houseplant also changes.

3. Variegated Umbrella Plant (Schefflera arboricola Variegata)

This tropical houseplant has glossy green leaves with yellow or white colors. It can grow into a small tree with an umbrella-like leaf arrangement. I don’t have this houseplant with variegated leaves at home, but I know it loves bright and indirect light. Prefers well-drained soil. It needs medium watering. So make sure that the soil dries well between waterings.

4. Aluminum Plant (Pilea cadierei)

Aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei) on a coffee table in the living room

The silver streaks on the green color give the foliage a metallic appearance, so we call this houseplant the aluminum plant.

The strange appearance and patterns of the leaves make it my first choice for decorations, indoor plant collections, and terrariums.

It grows well in well-drained soil, bright and indirect light, and high humidity. It is better to water typically, once or twice a day, but be careful not to be waterlogged. This indoor plant grows one to two feet and may even break the pot if the roots grow and need more space. So check this indoor plant often.

5. Variegated Arrowhead Plant (Syngonium podophyllum Variegata)

This beautiful houseplant has oval leaves that point at the tip of the leaf like an arrow.

As far as I know, the leaves are pale green, white, or cream.

When this indoor plant grows, the arrow’s tip becomes more distinct, and the white color of the leaves spreads. You may also see slight pink colors on the leaves.

I usually grow it as a trailing vine, but you can prune houseplant if you don’t have enough space.

As always, Follow the three principles of houseplant care, which include bright and indirect light, normal watering, and well-drained soil.

6. Variegated Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema Silver Bay)

It doesn’t matter if you have experience growing houseplants or not, it doesn’t matter if you have a green thumb or not, you can’t see this evergreen plant with a large and spear shape with silver and green colors and not be tempted to have it. Because it gives elegance to your home.

This variegated houseplant is stubborn about light and grows in low to medium light conditions. It also prefers well-drained soil and balanced watering.

7. Variegated Peperomia (Peperomia obtusifolia Variegata)

Variegated peperomia on a desk with books next to it in a room

Several years ago, when I saw that small plant with thick, oval-shaped leaves with white and creamy green patterns on my friend’s office desk, I was fascinated by it and asked its name. Then I looked for it in a flower shop, and since then, Peperomia has been my good green friend.

This houseplant with variegated leaves is easy care houseplant. Thus, it likes bright and indirect light and can survive in lower light levels. Its succulent-like leaves store water, so it prefers low watering. I always put soil with proper drainage in its pot.

8. Variegated Monstera (Monstera deliciosa Variegata)

Variegated Monstera has large leaves that are houseplant heart-shaped leaves and decorated with white, cream, or green highlights. The patterns of each houseplant are different, which makes them look amazing.

The origin goes back to Southern Mexico, and it is a hardy houseplant and it doesn’t have a problem with dehydration, but if you like your variegated houseplant growing 3 to 8 feet well, put it in bright and indirect light and turn the houseplant pot once in a while. Hydrate it every 2 to 4 weeks and use best soil for houseplant with proper drainage.

9. Variegated Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera adansonii Variegata)

This variegated houseplant has small white or cream leaves that look strange with its small and large holes. Remember to provide it with bright and indirect light, regular watering, and drained soil, and prune it from time to time to encourage growth.

10. Variegated Japanese Aralia (Fatsia japonica Spider’s Web)

ariegated Japanese aralia (Fatsia japonica) with a wooden door in the background

This tropical indoor plant has shiny white leaves resembling spider webs. For this reason, this houseplant with variegated leaves is known as a spider web. Trust me, your houseplant will grow well only with standard watering, proper soil, and exposure to bright and indirect light.

11. Variegated Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica Tineke)

This variegated houseplant is a small tree for the corner of your living room. This indoor plant’s thick, shiny, big leaves attract everyone’s attention.

It grows a lot. The height of some of them starts from 2 feet and reaches 10 feet.

About the color of the leaves, the leaves of this indoor plant are usually green, but you can see cream, yellow, red, or pink spots on them. If you want your indoor plant to keep its colors, provide enough light. I have heard that some have all five colors, but unfortunately, I have not seen this particular rubber plant.

This houseplant does not need so much care. Like most houseplants, it wants bright and indirect light, and you should make sure the soil is dry before each watering. In my opinion, watering once a week is enough.

Each leaf of the Variegated Rubber Plant and Variegated Rubber Tree looks like a painting

12. Variegated Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica Shivereana)

This variegated houseplant with yellow, white and large green leaves cleans the air well and is a unique choice for your home or office. Ensure the health and growth of your Variegated Rubber Tree by providing enough water, soil, and lighting for houseplant.

13. Variegated Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum Brazil)

Every day, I enjoy the beauty of this climbing houseplant in the hanging basket in the corner of my bedroom, with its heart-shaped leaves in yellow and green colors. I recommend growing it because it is easy to care for and fast growing houseplant. Just water it well, provide soil with good drainage, and place it in bright and indirect light.
