Are you tired of green houseplants and looking for houseplants with colorful leaves to add excitement to your indoor forest? Here are some colorful houseplants whose leaf color, in my opinion, is very attractive.
To be honest, because of the projects we usually work on, we mostly use modern indoor plants. However, I also have experience in interior plant design with colorful indoor plants. If you have any questions about choosing colorful houseplants, I’d be happy to help in any way I can.
1. Croton (Codiaeum variegatum)
The bright and colorful leaves of the Croton plant were the first thing that surprised many people. The leaves of this tropical houseplant, one of the most colorful houseplants, can show a mix of Red, green, yellow, orange, white, pink, and purple. The leaves are leathery, and their shapes vary from narrow and long to wide and lobed.
When it came to houseplant care, many people gave up because this colorful houseplant needs regular and relatively complex care. Try to provide a warm and humid environment with bright and indirect light and suitable houseplant soil for your colorful houseplant. Water it weekly. Constant and high humidity are necessary to keep the leaves’ colors alive, and more light makes the color of the leaves brighter. On the other hand, the cold weather causes leaves to fall.
Put it far away from the reach of pets like dogs, cats, and humans because this indoor plant is poisonous.
I heard that this houseplant can grow up to 10 feet tall in tropical environments, but they don’t have the chance to grow to this size in the house and the pot. For example, my Croton plant was about 4 feet tall when it was fully grown and adult.
My advice is that if you see that your indoor plant is in a good place and growing fast, don’t change it because it will go into shock and lose all its colorful leaves. With proper houseplant care, it won’t take long to get well, but it’s still better for your houseplant to live in peace.
2. Purple Passion Plant (Gynura aurantiaca)
Purple Passion Plant, with its velvety serrated leaves covered with fine and dark purple hairs, captivated fans of purple color. The leaves are deep green under the purple fuzz. Small orange or yellow flowers and colorful leaves on this houseplant may be seen.
Regarding the care of this colorful houseplant, it likes bright, indirect light and moderate watering houseplant. Just let the soil dry between two waterings. I put it near a sunny window but away from direct sunlight and enjoy the gloomy appearance of the eye-catching purple color.
3. Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya)
Another houseplant to add color to the house is the polka dot plant. This colorful houseplant has prominent patterned leaves. The leaves are green and filled with pink, red, or white spots.
This spotted plant, also known as the freckle face plant, is small, does not take up much space, and is usually used for terrariums. Because it prefers high humidity.
This houseplant comes from the tropical regions of Madagascar, South Africa, and East Asia, and if you pay attention to its original birthplace, you understand there is no need to take care of it that much. So prepare a comfortable environment for the colorful houseplant with bright indirect light, heat, and constantly moist soil.
In outdoor gardens, it usually grows for one year and indoors for several years.
You may see bright flowers on the Polka Dot Plant, which is pleasant when it grows outdoors, but if it grows indoors, when you visit the buds, remove them before it goes to seed.
Indeed, if you give bright and filtered light, pinch the tip of the back stem to prevent getting leggy.
4. Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides)
Coleus from the mint family is available in red, pink, yellow, green, and purple colors.
The serrated or lobed leaves, with this houseplant’s color and complex designs, had attracted the attention of a young man who wanted to buy it as a gift for his wife. It was a unique choice because this colorful houseplant has impressive beauty and easy care.
First, I asked him if they have pets because this houseplant is toxic to cats and dogs. they did not have any pets.
The second question was whether their house had a back garden or not. Because this colorful houseplant can be grown indoors and outdoors, it grows even faster in the garden.
In the end, I reminded him of the essential points of care. For example, this houseplant with colorful leaves grows in bright and indirect light. It can be alive in the shade to some extent. For this indoor plant to keep a bushy and compact growth habit, the stems should be pinched regularly to prepare them for more color.
5. Red Aglaonema (Aglaonema ‘Siam Aurora’)
Dark green foliage with red edges and veins is essential for any home. In addition to beauty, this is an air purifier houseplant and Simple-care houseplants and suitable for all busy people. A place that has Low to medium light and well-draining soil are things that it needs. Don’t forget to water correctly when the soil is dry.
6. Caladium (Caladium bicolor)
Large heart-shaped leaves in red, pink, white, and green colors were also popular.
Despite the vibrant and tropical appearance of the caladium plant, which is a type of peace lily, the leaves are very fragile and sensitive. These leaves die in winter and are reborn in warm months. Moreover, in the hot season, you should know that the tender leaves get burned by direct sunlight.
So, if the health of the colorful houseplant is vital to you, pay attention to bright, indirect light, high humidity, and proper drainage soil for houseplant. You can plant it in the shady areas of the garden or place the houseplant pot in indoor spaces so that it grows 12 to 30 inches.
Now, is it worth keeping this houseplant with colors?
7. Begonia (Begonia rex)
All types of begonia species, including King Begonia and Begonia bowerae, have various patterns and colors. Still, three things make Begonia Rex unique to me.
First, there is patterned foliage in shades of red, pink, silver, purple, and green. Second, its leaves are large, asymmetrical, and textured; third, they produce pink, white, and red flowers in hot seasons.
After looking at their stunning leaves with spirals, spots, and polka dots, I quickly found a suitable place at home with bright, indirect light and high humidity, consistently moist, well-drained soil because it is worth having.
Remember, keep your dog and cat away from it.
8. Oxalis (Oxalis triangularis)
The first time I saw this colorful houseplant, I wrongly thought several purple butterflies were sitting on a pot. The beauty and delicacy of this houseplant are exemplary; also, from autumn to spring, the beauty of this plant doubles with white and pink flowers.
It is not over yet. Triangular and dark purple leaves open during the day and close at night and on cloudy days.
This colorful houseplant has a tuberous root system and goes dormant in one period throughout the year. This sleep begins with the fall of the leaves, and you should not water for 4 to 6 weeks.
This indoor plant is from Brazil and does not grow much in conditions other than there. Poisonous to humans and pets. Oxalis requires bright, indirect light and well-drained soil with moderate watering.
