Most people buy ZZ plants and keep them at home because of their beauty, but that’s not the whole story. Here, I would like to reveal the secret of the ZZ plant’s advantages to know how you can help yourself by having a ZZ plant.
1. Fresh air with a ZZ plant
If you want to breathe clean air, you should have a ZZ plant. It doesn’t matter if the ZZ plant lives outside or in the corner of the room; it is one of the best houseplants for purifying air.
Research has shown that this houseplant surprisingly removes harmful toxins.
It absorbs volatile organic compounds that evaporate from paint solvents and other synthetic materials, also known as VOCs, such as xylene, toluene, and benzene, and keeps us safe.
2. An eye-catching home with a ZZ plant
The ZZ plant has been one of my first choices for boho or minimal-style projects. Of course, the Black or Raven ZZ plant is mostly known as a modern houseplant.
This houseplant looks strong, adds sculptural elements, and makes your living room or office more attractive. I always enjoy seeing the sunlight on its shiny, dark green leaves.
3. Suitable for busy people
The ZZ plant is one of the low-maintenance houseplants and is ideal for those who are not familiar with houseplants at all or don’t have enough time to care for them.
When we come to the ZZ plant care, I must say that you should pay attention to some issues such as ZZ plant light requirements, watering, soil, pests, and diseases.
Although this houseplant can adapt to almost any level of light, it prefers bright and indirect light.
ZZ plants have rhizomes, which store water perfectly. So you don’t need to water your houseplant frequently. Check the soil surface and water it if it is dry to avoid watering too much or too little. I usually hydrate my ZZ plant every two to three weeks.
ZZ plant soil mix must be drained so the houseplant does not become overwatered ZZ plant. Otherwise, you see the ZZ plant leaves turning yellow one by one.
Like other houseplants, the ZZ plant may be attacked by pests and suffer from diseases. But it’s very tough, and it only has problems if it’s under a lot of stress.
4. Enhancing your well-being with a ZZ plant
Nowadays, every person wants to return to a place full of peace after a busy work day. Although it is not yet scientifically proven, having a houseplant like a ZZ plant in your house reduces stress levels. Also, It makes you feel a deep connection with nature.
Moreover, this houseplant creates an atmosphere where you can easily focus, make better decisions, and do your best. So, if your friend just started his own business, it is a unique gift for his office.
5. The extraordinary wonders of the ZZ plant
The ZZ plant was first found in East Africa, especially Zanzibar and Kenya and It became the most popular houseplant in the late 20th century.
Due to the fact that, the ZZ plant has a different metabolism called Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), it can open its stomata at night instead of during the day, unlike other houseplants. This useful function helps to avoid the problem of lack of water during droughts and hot days.
Drawbacks of the ZZ plant
although I am a big fan of the ZZ plants, I must say that they have several drawbacks.
– If consumed, ZZ plants can be toxic to cats, dogs, and children. Their sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the skin, mouth, and digestive system. Keeping them out of little children’s and dogs’ reach is advisable.
– ZZ plants grow slowly by nature. They gain a couple of inches annually on average. However, there could be other reasons why the ZZ plant is not growing properly.
