If you are a houseplant grower, you’ve definitely heard about the wonder of Zamioculcas Zamiifolias. People usually know it by common names like ZZ plant or Zanzibar Gem.
Well, if you are crazy about the beauty of this plant like me, it is better to be aware of how large and fast ZZ Plants grow and how long they live normally?
How big can ZZ plants get?
This popular houseplant usually grows 2 or 3 feet (60 to 90 centimeters) indoors, and under ideal conditions, it can reach up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) or more, over the years. I once saw one that was around 160 cm tall.
It can be said that, slow growth is exactly what makes a ZZ plant unique. In fact, this is impossible for large plants which grow fast. As a ZZ plant grows taller, its leaves and branches also spread out. So, it becomes a lush and leafy plant.
How fast do ZZ plants grow?
The ZZ plant grows slowly and is suitable for those who are not in a hurry to grow their plant. When you put it in the proper conditions, it will expand About 2 inches, and in optimal care conditions, up to 3 inches a year. In addition, sometimes it may produce a new branch, which is first a thick stem and then gradually covered with leaves.
How long do ZZ plants live?
Fortunately, I have the good news to tell you. ZZ plants have a long life and do not die simply. After about three to five years, it becomes a mature plant and can continue to grow for several decades. Like other indoor plants, the most serious thing that can kill your ZZ plant is overwatering. So always be careful how often to water ZZ plant.
Effective factors in ZZ plant growth
Here, I mention some care tips to have an attractive ZZ plant at home.
Indirect Light
Placing ZZ plant in indirect light will help to increase more.
Enough watering
Too much watering rots ZZ plant roots. Therefore, you should not water it too soon. Pay attention to the distance between two waterings, because ZZ plant must have time to dry.
Suitable ZZ plant soil mix
Potting mix should have high drainage to keep the roots healthy. If you give it water-soluble fertilizer every six months, your plant will grow faster.
The correct size of the pot
ZZ plants have rhizomes, so if the pot is too small, the plant will be under pressure and its growth will be limited.
Sufficient temperature and humidity
ZZ plant should be in temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C) and also low humidity environments. Misting can come in handy now and then to set these factors.
Cutting dead leaves off
Pruning ZZ plant and of course repotting ZZ plant every 18 to 24 months are very useful to be healthy and look beautiful.
Check ZZ plants frequently
Although, it is not a sensitive plant, it may be attacked by pests such as aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites, but this is rare. Clean the ZZ plant leaves with a wet cloth and if you see any pests, you can use insecticidal soap or neem oil.
