Would you like your snake plant to look beautiful, healthy, and grow well? Just trim it the way I explain and take your pruning snake plant to the next level.
First of all, note that most types of snake plants only need trimming when their leaves are damaged or they have grown too much, so please do not trim them unnecessarily.
Why prune a snake plant?
Well, there are several possibilities that if it happens, it is better to prune to enjoy your tidy, fresh and eye-catching snake plant in the house.
Healthcare
If you see that the leaves of your snake plant have turned yellow or brown, If your snake plant’s leaves have curled or if the snake plant is leaning over, the snake plant is warning you that it is not well.
At the same time as treating the plant and solving problems such as old age, overwatering snake plants, snake plant light issues, snake plant root rot, attacks of pests and fungal infection, I suggest that you trim it so that the damaged and dead parts of the Sansevieria do not increase.
Indeed, between repotting snake plants, you can trim too long, damaged or rotten roots.
Efficient growth
I agree that the snake plant is a slow grower, but it is not unlikely that, if you are a master of the art of snake plant care, it will grow several feet tall after a while. So, it is better to prune the overgrown snake plant to make it more compact and suitable.
tip: you can use healthy parts pruned to propagate snake plants.
When prune a snake plant?
The best time to prune is during the growing season. In spring and early summer, the plant grows sufficiently and recovers faster. It’s better not to prune in winter if you’re a beginner, and don’t prune more than once a year, depending on the condition of your snake plant.
In my opinion, if your snake plant is healthy and you are sure that you will not harm it, you do not need to limit yourself in time. You are free to trim your snake plant throughout the year whenever you feel it is necessary.
How do you prune a snake plant step by step?
It’s time to prune! I’m excited to share my adventure with pruning snake plants.
Checking the snake plant
Look over the snake plant from top to bottom. Anything that weakens the health of the snake plant or makes it look bad should be removed.
Buying essential tools
Go to the nearest gardening store and buy sharp pruning shears or scissors to bypass tearing the leaves, gloves to protect your hands and a container or bag to collect trimmed leaves.
Cleaning your pruning tools
With a clean cloth or cotton pad dipped in rubbing alcohol, disinfect the pruning shears or scissors blades completely to stop the spread of disease.
Start cutting away
Hold the leaf you want to trim in your hand and cut it slowly.
If the leaves are damaged and dead, trim them close to the soil line.
If the leaves have grown too much, make a clean cut without creating ragged edges because these edges are the entry point of the disease.
Throwing out damaged leaves
Discard the infected and damaged leaves in the trash so as not to cause more troubles like fungal diseases.
If the leaves are healthy, you can put them in green waste or add them to a pile to become compost. However, if you ask me, it’s better to propagate them. Just divide them into 3 or 4-inch pieces and let them callous for a few days, and then plant them in the well-draining snake plant soil or water.
Applying cinnamon powder
Many people forget, but it is better to apply some cinnamon powder to the cut end of the leaves with a cotton swab or your clean fingertip. In this way, it will heal faster, and it is safe from pests and fungi.
Watching out the shape of the snake plant again
After each picking, take a step back and see how your snake plant looks. Be careful not to cut more than a third at a time.
Post-Trimming caring
Now that the pruning is over, you need to take regular care of it like a healthy plant. Don’t overwater it, place it in bright and indirect sunlight, and don’t overlook the use of snake plant soil with high drainage.
Tip: If you take care of all these things, there will be no problem for the snake plant. You can repeat the steps whenever the snake plant is needed.
